Pro Bono Civil Protection Order Representation

Please join NVRDC with support from K&L Gates LLP to learn the basics of representing survivors of sexual assault, stalking, or intimate partner violence who seek safety through a Civil Protection Order (CPO) in D.C. Superior Court. After this training, pro bono attorneys will be ready to co-counsel a CPO case with NVRDC! CLE is available for DC, MD, VA and NY!

Participants: This training is primarily designed for attorneys interested in volunteering for pro bono opportunities at NVRDC, but other colleagues are welcome to attend.

Participants will gain an understanding of:

·        Learn about NVRDC and its procedures for pro bono attorneys co‐counseling cases

·        Discover the dynamics of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and stalking and how they impact legal representation

·        Review the applicable rules and statutes.

·        Examine the steps to preparing a CPO client and case.

·        Discuss CPO hearing scenarios.

·        Determine important follow‐up actions with clients after conclusion of the CPO hearing.

Following this training, pro bono attorneys will have the foundational knowledge necessary to co-counsel a CPO case with NVRDC – an opportunity to gain valuable and exciting in-court litigation experience while donating time and legal acumen to an important cause.
